Pandigital Novel

Pandigital announced the Novel on Monday, along with a partnership with bookseller Barnes & Noble, which has agreed to integrate its online bookstore, with more than 1 million e-books, into the device.

The Novel is a multimedia device with a 7″ color touchscreen that has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, weighs a pound and includes Wi-Fi connectivity for buying and downloading books and browsing the Web. The Novel gets up to six hours of battery life in reading mode. The Novel has a mini-USB port for moving files between a PC or Mac and its 1 GB internal storage that can be expanded through the e-reader’s SD/MMC memory card slot.

Other features include a virtual keyboard, a built-in dictionary, the ability to display content in either portrait or landscape mode, play music and video and supports PDF, ePub, and HTML formats.

The Novel is less expensive than the Kindle, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $200. The Kindle starts at ($259) $189. Pandigital plans to make the Novel available in June.

Samsung E60 e-book reader will come out in Spring

Samsung E60 e-book reader

Samsung unwrapped its awaited e-book reader, the E60, for the American market this week.

The $299 Samsung e-book reader will lack 3G cellular capabilities when it ships this spring, a notable omission compared with Kindle and Nook, both priced at $259. The Samsung eReader will have Wi-Fi onboard for downloading content (the Nook also has Wi-Fi). The company is considering adding 3G in later editions, says Reid Sullivan, senior vice president of audio-video and digital imaging marketing at Samsung.

Samsung is boasting of the device’s ability to enable users to annotate text, write notes and share this content with others including an electromagnetic resonance stylus pen for writing.

The E60 includes apps such as a journal, scheduler and memo for writing. You also can synch your Outlook calendar with the e-reader, which is a pretty handy trick.

Samsung’s e-book reader employs the same 6″ e-ink screen as the Kindle and Nook. It has 2 GB of built in memory (about 1,500 books). The E60 includes a Micro SD card slot, which will enable you to increase to storage by 16 GB.

The E60 e-book reader is a nice little package, but the $40 price premium over the Kindle and Nook, especially considering that those readers can deliver content via the cellular network, may be hard to sell.
