NookColor
The success of NOOKColor will be critical to B&N, especially since the regular NOOK is not going away. But considering that Amazon.com is likely to remain the big-gorilla when it comes to e-reading, and that Apple isn’t likely to be knocked off its tablet throne for a long time, if at all, B&N shareholders would seem to have cause for concern, especially since management seems dedicated to fine-tuning its poison pill in an effort to frustrate would-be suitors.

B&N introduced the nook last October and expected to sell the device online and through its stores during the holiday shopping season, but B&N was unable to keep up with demand, and had to delay shipping the device to online customers for weeks and nook was only able to stock some stores with demonstration-only models.

B&N announced on Monday in the company blog that the nook is available online and would be available in most company’s stores by mid-week.

B&N’s failure to meet demand for the nook last year. B&N was able to ship nooks in time to those people who ordered the device before Nov. 20, but other customers had to wait as long as February to receive the device.

Besides delays in shipments, nook buyers also had to deal with software bugs and slow response times. B&N in December released its first software update for the nook to fix some of the performance problems.

Barnes & Noble reader

Barnes & Noble says Nook is out of stock. The device will be available for new pre-orders only on January 15 which is even later than initially expected. We were waiting for Barnes & Noble to make the nook available again just after New Year’s Eve but that won’t happen anymore.

Sony said heavy demand for its latest e-reader and first Sony’s 3G reader, the Daily Edition, meant customers would receive their devices on a “first come, first serve basis” and shipments would not be guaranteed in time for the holidays.

Sony’s smaller non-3G Readers, the 5-inch Pocket Edition and the 6-inch Touch Edition are still available from $194.77 and $282.77 respectively.

The Kindle DX

Barnes & Noble said that its Nook e-reader delayed the shipment date into January 2010 for anyone ordering the devices after Nov. 20. This is the second time that Barnes & Noble announced a delay for its e-readers.

Reuters reports that Sony has also announced it has run out of supplies of its new reader as well, you can still find Sony readers in stock on Amazon Store.

The big winner here will be Amazon and its popular Kindle line of eReaders. Amazon had supply issues last year, but this year the ecommerce giant reportedly has plenty of stock of its readers. The unavailability of the Nook and Sony readers will have many consumers buying the Kindle since it will be available.
