‘A reflective color screen for the Kindle e-reader was a ways off’ says Jeff Bezos

Mr. Bezos, speaking at Amazon’s annual meeting with shareholders on Tuesday, said the Seattle-based company’s approach to digital reading was focused on two separate fronts:

  1. devices
  2. and being a retailer of the e-books themselves

CEO Jeff Bezos said Amazon would focus on building a Kindle that appealed to serious readers, as opposed to devices like the iPad that try to serve several different purposes. “There are always ways to do the job better if you are willing to focus in on one arena,” Mr. Bezos said.

For Amazon’s e-bookstore, Mr. Bezos said the company was focused on having the widest selection at the lowest prices.

Since Amazon changed its pricing system for five of the six largest publishers in April, Mr. Bezos said there had been a share shift among customers away from books priced over $10 to those priced below $10. He declined to give details on that shift.
